What are safety belts and straps? Safety belts and straps are restraints designed to attach to wheelchairs and keep the patient from exiting or falling from the chair. Safety belts and straps connect with either velcro or some type of buckle that can be undone by a care giver or the individual. Safety belts and straps also help an individual from sliding or shifting in the chair. For some, upper body control is limited and using safety belts and straps, like butterfly harnesses, keep them in an upright position.
